சுமார் நான்கு மீட்டர் உயரம் வரை வளரக்கூடிய மிளகுக் கொடி ஒரு பல்லாண்டுத் தாவரமாகும். படரும் கொடி வகையைச் சார்ந்த இத்தாவரம், அருகில் இருக்கும் மரம், தூண், கயிறு ஆகியவற்றை பற்றி படரும் தன்மையுடையது. இதன் கொடி 10 -12 அடிக்குமேல் கெட்டியான பட்டையுள்ள மரத்தில் பற்றி வளரும். முக்கியமாக முள் முருங்கையில், இக்கொடிகள் மரங்களைப் பின்னிப் பிணைந்து அடர்த்தியாக வளரும். மிளகின் இலைகள் வெற்றிலை போல் பெரிதாக இருக்கும்.
