சுமார் நான்கு மீட்டர் உயரம் வரை வளரக்கூடிய மிளகுக் கொடி ஒரு பல்லாண்டுத் தாவரமாகும். படரும் கொடி வகையைச் சார்ந்த இத்தாவரம், அருகில் இருக்கும் மரம், தூண், கயிறு ஆகியவற்றை பற்றி படரும் தன்மையுடையது. இதன் கொடி 10 -12 அடிக்குமேல் கெட்டியான பட்டையுள்ள மரத்தில் பற்றி வளரும். முக்கியமாக முள் முருங்கையில், இக்கொடிகள் மரங்களைப் பின்னிப் பிணைந்து அடர்த்தியாக வளரும். மிளகின் இலைகள் வெற்றிலை போல் பெரிதாக இருக்கும்.

The fresh leaves are valued as seasoning in the cuisines of South and Southeast Asia. They are most widely used in southern and west coast Indian cooking, usually fried along with vegetable oil, mustard seeds and chopped onions in the first stage of the preparation. They are also used to make thoran, vada, rasam and kadhi. In Cambodia, the leaves are roasted and used as an ingredient in a soup, maju krueng. In Java, the leaves are often stewed to flavor gulai. Though available dried, the aroma and flavor is greatly inferior.The oil can be extracted and used to make scented soaps.

The custard apple (A. reticulata), a small tropical American tree, gives the family one of its common names. Also known as bullock’s-heart for its globose shape, it has fruits with creamy white, sweetish, custardlike flesh.
